Getting Started
Research is clear that the sooner someone enters treatment, the better their odds — yet studies show families on average wait years before reaching out, often held back by stigma. At KKH Rehab we work to shorten that gap. One call to our Kailua-Kona team starts everything: a confidential assessment, insurance verification, and a clear plan, frequently completed the same day.
Because addiction affects the whole family, we welcome loved ones into the process from the very first conversation. If KKH Rehab is the right fit, we coordinate your arrival; if another level of care suits you better, we will say so honestly and help you find it. Every call is free and confidential.

- Comfortable, casual clothing for 7 to 10 days, plus light layers for cool evenings
- Swimwear for the aquatic center and athletic shoes for coastal hikes
- Toiletries without alcohol as an ingredient
- A small amount of cash and comfort items, such as family photos
Please leave at home alcohol, drugs, weapons, and valuables. Phone use is permitted during limited hours, family visits are scheduled on weekends, and pets are not permitted on campus.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does treatment last?
Medical detox typically runs 3 to 7 days, residential treatment 30 to 90 days, and outpatient programs 2 to 12 weeks. Research consistently links longer engagement to better outcomes — studies find that patients who complete at least 90 days of treatment have markedly higher one-year sobriety rates. Your clinical team recommends a length based on assessment.
Is detox medically supervised?
Yes. Detox at KKH Rehab is conducted under 24/7 physician and nursing supervision, with medication-assisted treatment (MAT) where indicated. This matters: unmanaged withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines can be life-threatening, and MAT for opioid use disorder has been shown to roughly halve the risk of overdose death.
Do you treat co-occurring psychiatric conditions?
Yes, and it is central to our model. National data show that roughly half of people with a substance use disorder also have a co-occurring psychiatric condition. Our dual diagnosis program treats both together in one integrated plan — the approach research identifies as the clinical standard for co-occurring disorders.
How involved can my family be?
As involved as you would like. Studies of family-inclusive treatment show improved retention and lower relapse rates, which is why we build family therapy and education into care. On a close-knit island like ours, that family foundation is one of the strongest predictors of lasting recovery.
What insurance do you accept?
KKH Rehab works with most major carriers, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Health Net, Ambetter, and MultiPlan, plus Medicare and Medicaid. Verification of benefits is completed at admission, typically the same day, so cost is clear before you commit.
How do I get started?
Call (808) 746-8181 any time, day or night. An admissions specialist completes a confidential assessment, verifies your insurance, and coordinates your start of care — often the same day you call.
